IN THE NEWS

🛃 Thousands of healthcare professionals invited by the immigration department. This month, Canada held category-based Express Entry Draw, inviting 4,000 healthcare and social services workers to apply for permanent residency. This marks the third healthcare‑focused draw this year and reflects Canada’s growing emphasis on addressing labour shortages in the sector through targeted immigration pathways. Full article.

💼 Changes in the CPSBC bylaws accelerate the hiring of international doctors. In just two months, nearly 780 U.S. healthcare workers applied for jobs in British Columbia following a targeted recruitment campaign and regulatory changes that simplify licensing for U.S.-trained physicians. The province’s marketing push in states like Washington and Oregon—featuring ads and outreach events—has already led to dozens of licensing applications, aiming to address healthcare staffing shortages and attract talent to B.C.'s universal health system. 🕵 Will Canada classify AI scribes as medical devices? Based on the recent NHS England notification that classifies AI medical scribe tools as Class I medical devices under UK regulations, there's now a growing global debate about whether Canada will follow suit. Canadian stakeholders, including regulators, developers, and clinicians, are closely watching to see how Health Canada interprets AI scribes under its own risk‑based classification system, which already treats patient management software as Class I or Class II medical devices depending on their functions. 📉 AI tool cuts unexpected deaths in hospital by 26%, Canadian study finds. A new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that the AI-system, Chartwatch, contributed to a 26% reduction in unexpected deaths on the general medicine ward. Developed since 2017 by the Unity Health team, Chartwatch analyzes over 100 real-time health metrics from patient records to flag risks hourly, working alongside clinicians without replacing them. Experts emphasize AI’s potential to support strained health systems but stress the need for broader testing, privacy safeguards, and cautious optimism. Full article.

CHERRY INSIGHTS: Turning Summer Hiring Challenges into Strategic Wins

The average time to hire a physician in Canada ranges from 77 to 228 days, depending on specialty—and it only gets worse in summer. Vacations delay interviews, candidate availability drops, and even short-term locum hires face licensing and onboarding slowdowns. Clinics often scramble to fill urgent roles, but by the time a locum is secured, the gap has already strained staff and care delivery.

Candidates, meanwhile, aren’t just looking at the job ad. Three out of four check the clinic’s website or online presence before applying. If that digital impression is confusing or outdated, many move on. With more U.S. physicians exploring Canadian roles, first impressions matter more than ever—yet many clinics don’t know where to start when it comes to branding or cross-border recruitment.

That’s where Cherry Health helps. Clinics can post jobs and build a digital profile that tells their story—team, culture, and care model—right where candidates are searching. Better yet, link that profile across other job boards, such as HealthMatchBC, HealthForceOntario, and CFPC Classifieds, to drive applicants back to a single, trusted destination. And long-term, treat every locum as a potential full-time recruit—recruitment isn’t seasonal, it’s strategic.

I speak in codes and colored stripes,
Yet no one hears me talk.
Behind the counter, I might hide,
Or line a self-serve block.
I don’t diagnose, but I respond,
To fevers, pain, or wheeze.
And though I’m small, I hold the key
To temporarily ease.

What am I?

A. A pharmaceutical barcode
B. A medication blister pack
C. An over-the-counter drug
D. A drug identification number (DIN)
