Leaders in Healthcare June Mid-Month Newsletter

Longevity science is shifting focus from simply living longer to living healthier for longer. In Episode 72, we explore how clinicians can lead the charge in preventive care, improve patient engagement with early screening, and stay grounded in evidence while navigating the emerging field of longevity medicine.

TLDR; WHY HEALTHSPAN, NOT LIFESPAN SHOULD BE HEALTHCARE’S REAL GOAL

What if the goal of healthcare wasn’t just to help people live longer—but to help them live better for longer?

In Episode 72 of Leaders in Healthcare, longevity scientists and healthcare investors Sergey Jakimov & Artem Trotsyuk shared a powerful message: it’s time to shift our focus from simply adding years to adding healthy years. And that means rethinking how we deliver care, how we communicate with patients, and how we prioritize prevention.

Take cancer screening as an example. Despite being free and widely available in many countries, breast cancer screening participation rates often fall below 40%. The problem? People know cancer is dangerous—but they don’t always connect that to why early detection matters to them personally. Personalized, digital approaches have shown real promise in bridging this gap and improving engagement.

“Everyone knows cancer is bad for you, right? The problem is we’re very bad at explaining to people in simple terms why this should be done and why it relates to them, actually, personally.”

Sergey Jakimov

At the same time, more patients are asking about cutting-edge longevity treatments. As clinicians, we need to stay rooted in evidence. That means steering clear of flashy but unproven interventions like stem cell “cures,” and instead guiding patients toward strategies grounded in science.

“Stay bound to rigorous evidence-based stuff. There are things in the longevity ecosystem that people shouldn’t try.”

“When I ask my doctor about something new, the response is often, ‘I haven’t read enough papers of enough data to confirm that’s a real effect, so I can’t advise you on it.’ That’s a reasonable and responsible approach.”

Artem Trotsyuk

Fortunately, there’s a growing field to support this work. Organizations like the Healthy Longevity Medicine Society (HLMS) in Switzerland are leading the way in defining evidence-based, preventive protocols—some even recognized by major health systems like the NHS.

Longevity medicine isn’t about chasing the fountain of youth. It’s about helping our patients stay healthier, longer—and making prevention the foundation of care.
